Description

I love supporting and witnessing people's emergence into being more fully and authentically themselves. Whether the journey is about identifying, planning and taking action to achieve a particular goal or exploring and acknowledging recent or past difficulties and/or trauma and moving on, I will listen, respond and intervene to the best of my abilities.

As well as offering Life coaching to focus on your specific projects at home or work and / or related to your quality of life and lifestyle, I provide general counselling for a wide range of presenting problems or concerns and am also particularly interested in the emotional effect of being diagnosed and treated for medical conditions and in workng with people who need to manage their lives in the context of a chronic condition.


My professional background.


I originally qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 1974 and worked in Community Mental Health settings for 16 years within the public and voluntary sectors as an Occupational Therapist. During those years I developed a particular interest in working with creative arts (art, music, drama, movement etc) as a medium to support people in exploring and expressing themselves, managing their lives and and relating to each other.

I undertook a number of brief and also more in depth personal development and professional courses including several years of Psychodrama training during the 1970's and 1980's which I found very enjoyable, challenging, and lifechanging.

During those years I did some additional work as an independent practitioner offering stress management and relaxation Skills privately and through Adult Education organisations.

My work within Community Mental Health early intervention teams during the 1980's involved working with distressed people, often individually and sometimes with other members of their household.

In 1988 I decided to enter into in-depth Gestalt Psychotherapy training with the intention of gaining further skills and an additional qualification to support me in the work I was doing.

My Gestalt Psychotherapy training took place over a period of 6 years throughout which in addition to attending the (900hrs) training modules, I was in weekly personal Gestalt Therapy and receiving regular supervision (418 hrs) of my work with clients (3309 hrs). I qualified and became UKCP registered in 1994 and later went on to gain an MSc (distinction) in Gestalt Psychotherapy from Middlesex University.

I subsequently undertook 4 years of Integrative Psychotherapy training during the 1990's and additionally, Clinical Supervision training, gaining a diploma in supervision in 1997. More recently I completed a one year training in Sensory Motor Psychotherapy for the treatment of trauma and then trained and gained a diploma in Life coaching.

I have been in private practice since 1988 providing mainly face to face counselling and psychotherapy to individuals and couples, supervising other practitioners, facilitating psychotherapy groups and providing training modules for several different counselling and psychotherapy and counselling training organisations.

I offer Therapy, Life Coaching,Supervision, Stress Management and Personal / professional development. To enable you to consider which might suit you, I will briefly enlarge on each of these below:

Gestalt Therapy
I work face to face with individuals, couples or groups in several different locations within Pembrokeshire / South Wales.

Gestalt Therapy is based on supporting your awareness of what you are actually experiencing, the choices available at this moment and your unique responses in this moment. The client-therapist relationship is central to this process.

My role is to encourage you to become aware of your immediate here and now experience - physical sensations, emotional feelings, thoughts, dreams and fantasies, behaviour ..... existence ... and to engage with me as a fellow human being (always within appropriate professional ethical boundaries).

The more aware we are of our immediate experience, the greater are our meaningful choices. With awareness comes increased ability for recognising and should we want to do so, adjusting well practiced yet not always helpful patterns of behaviour and for increasing our repertoire of responses and behaviours.

Life Coaching
I completed a diploma in Life Coaching in 2006. I offer Life Coaching consultations face to face, via Skype, phone or e mail. My role is to help you to focus and take action to achieve personal or professional goals you want to reach. I offer some structures which will assist you to- define your goal, plan how you intend to move towards achieving it and to maintain progress towards achieving what you want. Being clear what it is you are aiming for is essential - rather like planning a journey to a particular destination. Unless we know where we want to end up we can't plan the means to get there effectively!

Supervision
I have been supervising other practitioners and trainees since 1990. I provide supervision face to face and via Skype and the phone. Supervision is about providing a professional and confidential context in which a practitioner explores their relationship with and the processes taking place between themselves and their client/s. The intention is to both provide support for the practitioner in their work and to facilitate quality service provision and ethical practice for their clients.


Stress Management
I offer this face to face, via Skype, phone or e mail. I offer a combination of supprting you in looking at what you are finding stressful and identifying plus trying out some potential different ways to manage these stressors. I may also introduce you to some relaxation skills which you can use to lower your general level of physiological and psychological arousal or distress, enabling you to think more clearly and to maintain your health and well being.
