Hi

I have arachnophobia. And Im suffering bad from it. Like really bad. I've read in an article that it can be cured in various ways, including hypnosis, but also through self help.

I'm a bit afraid of actually talking to a therapist about it, as I'm really embarrassed about being afraid of spiders. I mean, a guy like me should NOT be afraid of something as silly as spiders. I haven't told anyone about this, not even my fiancé, so the only one who knows is my mother. Basically that's the reason that I'm kinda hoping that this self help thing is possible.

Please advise.

/Mark

Hi,

Firstly don't be ashamed of it. Arachnophobia is a very common fear, even for guys.

There are several ways to cure it such as hypnosis, exposure therapy, EFT and CBT.

Look into a few of those and see what you feel most comfortable with. Feel free to contact me if you would like more information on any of them. As I said originally though please do not worry about talking to a therapist. Arachnophobia is common and we are not here to judge you.

Hi Mark

The treatment for arachnophobia that I learned about was Cognitive Behaviour Therapy - apparently it can be very effective. There are several CBT practitioners on this site who I'm sure would be able to help you.

In addition, you can Google "arachnophobia" and "systematic desensitisation", which might give you a little more information.

Good luck!

Sarah

Hypnosis is best because it can get to change the memory of when you were afraid first of all

All phobia can be constructed but the unconscious mind is the best tool for going into the memory and erasing it. Carole

If we did not have fear we would not have any way of judging situations in fact tending towards fears as you put is not unhealthy

Hi Mark,
Well done for posting. It is your first step to being comfortable aroundspiders.
Being afraid of spiders is very common and is either something thatdevelops gradually or something that has a key event.
I know of a case where a therapist went to a house to work on a motherand they were chatting to the children. When asked one of the children said"When we see a spider we all run into the cupboard under the stairs andpretend to be scared". Clearly the mum was having an effect on thechildren. Because a lot of people have family that are afraid of thesame thing and it goes back generations they often think it is hereditary. This is not the case. We are very good mimics as children and we learn a lot ofour traits by watching our carers and unconsciously modelling their behaviours. This is great for the good things but if something negative is learned like aphobia it can seem out of our control since we are not aware we have learnt it.
The single event cause is common too. I have just worked on a lady witha fear of flying. She was fine until she had a flight with a bit of turbulence. This scared her. The next time she flew she was worried it might happen againand she was nervous. This stress built up and was added to the initial fearuntil it became a phobia of flying.
She lost that fear in 10 minutes. I then did a full trance for her andshe went up in a 4 seater aircraft and actually had a go at flying it.
I don’t know which of these scenarios most fits you but the fact is itdoesn’t matter. The past is the past what you are interested in is beingcomfortable when you know you are near a spider in the future. This, with thecorrect help is something you can easily achieve. There are many methods thatcan be used. As a clinical hypnotist I clearly favour Hypnosis. You overcomeyour fear in a relaxed and effortless way and you are always in control.
A positive future is within your grasp. You have taken the first step. Now continue, it is within your power.

Hi

It's very nice to see that so many people are willing to help and give advice about my problem.

I understand that therapy is effective, but I don't feel like talking to a therapist just yet. I tried to do some reading up on different homepages just now.

Unfortunately I haven't found any information about self-help. I know this homepage offers paid therapy, but as I mentioned I'm not interested just yet. Do any of you know whether it's actually possible to do some sort of self-help?

/Mark

Hi Mark,

Take a look into EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) its very effective with phobias and although best results are achieved when working with a therapist it is effective when done alone.

Hi Mark

Look into EFT. I have found EFT to be quite remarkable, and often works when nothing else will. Sometimes, not always, EFT can also bring instant relief

Hi Mark,

I'm assuming you have no information about EFT already so these books are just for those interested and don't need background knowledge. If you do have some information already or know something about it let me know and I'll look into some more advanced books for you.

Emotional Freedom Technique For Dummies (probably the best if this is the first time you're hearing about it)

The EFT Manual by Gary Craig (Also very very good. Written by the founder of EFT)

Both can be found on Amazon.

Hope this helps
Hayley

Hi Mark, well done for taking a brave step and admitting your fear and wanting to do something about it. I treat a lot of phobias and like yourself, I see a lot of professional people such as Managing Directors, Doctors, Barristers etc, who find it highly embarrassing that they have this phobia. I am qualified in Advanced cognitive Hypnotherapy, TFT, EFT, NLP etc so use which ever method fits best with each individual client, sometimes switching methods. In most cases a rapid phobia cure fix is very effective using NLP and that CAN be conducted online. Sometimes a follow up mirroring some of the techniques, then applying them during deep hypnosis works well as a back up if the first session isn't entirely successful. I think you might prefer to see a therapist who is local as the face to face follow up might be required or somebody you feel you can get along with, but check out a few on GoMentor or their websites before you decide. You are welcome to contact me of course.

Dear Mark, It is well known among therapists that ALL hypnosis is SELF hypnosis. You are never out of control or under somebody else's influence. The therapist uses 'tools' such as hypnosis or TFT or NLP etc and trains you how to use this for yourself. I think that a chat to a therapist will help you to understand that they can coach YOU through the process of SELF HELP. They have far more training and experience than you could gain from a few written articles, so take advantage of it. You can take control of this, and help YOURSELF with professional direction. So my next question is have you a phobia about accepting therapy too as you emphasise your desire to be able to 'help yourself'. Is there a fear of being out of control and if so is this greater than your fear of spiders? I hope not. I'm sure you will find a cure or the answers you are seeking quite soon.

Dear Mark
In the absence of any details, one self-help I have shared with clients that can work surprisingly well is very simple. I will outline it below.
Think about the trigger for the fear. Spiders are on the planet all the time but you only feel the fear sometimes. Identify when that is. (eg see it, see it running, if it gets close to you) Next, delay that moment. In your mind, imagine the spider just before that trigger moment. Name him (eg 'Oh, it's Henry again). Then move on to the next step (eg running) Stop the picture. Imagine Henry with a broken leg in a cast so he can't run very fast at all. Perhaps he has a crutch or a cane - be inventive) Now let him come closer. He has dark glasses on, perhaps a funny hat. He is trying to get home to his family - get food - get a drink whatever. Do you still feel the fear? You have to do it a few times every day.
Let me know how you get on!

Hi Jon,

I'm new on this platform, so I'm not sure I'm doing this the right way...
I'm suffering from arachnophobia. I have had it since I was a child, but have been able to live with it, as I grew up in a big city and we didn't really have big spiders in our flat. Recently I moved to the countryside and it becomes obvious that I can't ignore my problem any longer or I will drive my husband mad.
I have done a bit of reading and online research and I feel hypnotherapy would be the right thing for me to do.
There are a few things though, that I'm not quite sure about.
First of all, I am native German and my mother tongue is German. I now live in the UK and would have to see a therapist here. I'm wondering if it would work at all to do hypnotherapy sessions in a different language than my mother tongue. The therapist would be "communicating" with my subconsciousness and I don't know if my subconsciousness would reply in German, for it is the language that have spoken since I was a child.
My second question is: What if there wasn't a significant moment in my childhood, that caused the origin of my fear? It says everywhere that arachnophobia is not something you are born with but something you learn and during the session one would go back to that particuliar moment... Well, I'm just thinking, what if there wasn't such a moment? What if I can't remember it,not even in the session? Would hypnotherapy still work?
I hope you can help,

Wiebke
