Hi everyone

I see that only a few people have posted here before but i hope some of the psycologists on here can help me. I'm a 23 year old girl and ive always been "normal"....

Lately Ive had some weird feelings that made me wonder if i have anxiety. Because i googled some of the symptoms and it seems like i might actually have this. Its really scaring me and i dont really feel very well.

I have had these symptoms for the past months:

- nausea
- dizziness
- chest pain
- my friends say i look really really pale all of a sudden

What do you guys think? If you are psycologist i really would appreciate some help

Hi
I am a counsellor (not a psycologist) and help people with anxiety. Have you spoken to your GP? Anxiety can be a learned behaviour usually from a bad or unhelpful expierience in our lives. Sounds like you would like some help - feel free to give me a call for a free chat.
Best Wishes
Diane

Hi Bluegirl87
I am a coach not a psychologist. Everyone suffers from anxiety at some time in their lives. As you say you are normal and it is normal to be anxious at times. The symptoms you are feeling can be attributed to many things. Anxiety is usually assessed according to the severity of the symptoms, the number of times the feelings occur and how long they continue but as Diane suggests your GP is the first port of call if the physical feelings are disrupting your life. Sometimes we pay too much attention to what our friends say and our subconscious minds can pick up all sorts of messages which it then turns into feelings.

Hi Bluegirl 87,

As I am neither a psychologist or any other type of mental health professional I cannot advise you on your specific questions.

However; I recommend that you do as both Nigel and Diane suggests: call your GP.

If you find that you definitely do need to talk to a psychologist or another mental health professional, I suggest you to book a One2One Session with one of the talented therapists that are listed on GoMentor.com.

I havent spoken to my GP yet because he is one my mother's close friends and i really dont want my mother to know. She has had anxiety herself a couple of years ago that resulted in panic attacks so she will be too wrorried!

The last three days i have been studying for an exam in summer university, so ive really not had much sleep. Im done with the exam now and i badly want to sleep - but i cant.... Its like i want to sleep but cant.... Im so confused and i cant figure out if im just over thinkin everything or i do have anxiety?

Any advice if i dont want to contact my GP?

Hi Blugirl87... maybe a blood test to rule out any physical problems would be pertinent and a chat to your GP. If there isnt any physical reason you could explore this further

It appears you are anxious you GP will tell your mother about any consultation he has with you. A GP is a proffessional who is bound by confidentiality, the only way your mother would informed is if you were a minor. How old are you?

Hi Bluegirl87
Your GP is bound by confidentiality however Im guessing you are unsure if this will be upheld. Have you considered seeing another GP who your mother does not know.
Not getting enough sleep will have an inpact on how you feel. Feeling confused can be one of the symptoms for lack of sleep, this is something you could speak to a GP about. You could also try speaking to a therapist who would listen to you and help you understand what your anxiety is about. A counsellor can also help you look at your thoughts and help you to see how your thoughts may be feeding the anxiety. I hope this help you.

Hi Bluegirl87
the fact that you are worrying over sleeping will not help. Exam times are usually anxious times for all of us. Often after an exam the mind takes time to readjust to a less hectic lifestyle and then can cause you to worry. This only becomes a problem if you allow your mind to take charge. It might help if you can try to allow yourself to relax by deep breathing for 5 seconds in and 5 seconds out for about 10 breathes. As you breathe in say to yourself "I know I am breathing in " and as you breath out say I know i Iam breathing out.". What this does is helps you to achieve a state of balance between your thoughts and your feelings. If you find this helps try to do some progressive relaxtion excercises by relaxing each part of your body from head to toe. Only you know whether your relationship with your mother has any bareing upon your current feelings, but some coaches are also therapists and they can help with a wide range of issues.

Dee Philips - I am 23 years old - which you can see in my post

I do NOT want to contact my GP. I know about the confidential stuff but Im still pretty sure that my GP would tell my mother. This has happened before (also after I turned 18)... My GP and my mother are VERY close friends so I simply don't trust that my GP won't tell...

So as I said any advice if I dont wanna contact my HP?

Nigel - Thank you for the advice... I tried doing the whole breathing exercise yesterday and it kinda worked

Hi Bluegirl87

Why not search for a therapist here? Preferably one who is an accredited member of a professional body such as the BACP or UKCP. You don't need a referral, so there would be no need to involve your doctor at all.

With best wishes

Hi Bluegirl87,

The symptoms you've mentioned might not be anxiety as such, but a stress reaction to the studies and exam you've gone through. Often stress can happen after the event and that can confuse us.

We can also get stressed about stress, if that makes sense? We keep checking in with ourselves and looking for how we feel, which often makes it worse. I would suggest you doing things that you really like - bubble baths, watching your favourite feel good movie, breathing exercises (as mentioned above), eating healthy foods can often help too. Stress is a normal part of life, but if it persists and the symptoms get worse, then it would be a good idea to work it through with a therapist.

Give one of us a call, we are here to help.

All the best,
Tanya

I'm sooooooo relieved! I've been on holidays for the last 12 days and I finally feel better.

Before I went on holiday I was very very nervous that my symptoms wouldn't stop and that I would actually have to do something seriously about it. After a few days in France I started to relax and I kinda forgot about the symptoms until I just realised that they are all gone (more or less that is). I still experience a bit of chest pain but it's not as severe as it was 3 weeks ago.

Tanya - I guess you were right about the stress thing! Thank you for the advise.

Bluegirl,

I know that you have problems with privacy regarding your doctor, but I would suggest that you seek a medical opinion sooner rather than later. If need be, go to your local A&E unit, as they will probably agree to see you, and you will be able to do it without contact with your doctor.

Once you've done this, why not arrange to be transferred to a new doctor, so that you can speak to them with no fear of breach of confidentiality?

With best wishes

Sarah

Great that you made an appointment, Bluegirl87; and please remember that there is always A&E if the pain gets worse.

As for changing your doctor, here's a link to the Citizens' Advice Bureau on the subject:

Hi Bluegirl87 sorry to hear you are not sorted. I just spent half an hour giving you my thoughts and to my dismay it has been lost. This is the second time today this has happened to me and it is too late at night for me to repeat it. Also I work intuitively so much of what I said has now gone.
The general jist of it was that once you clarify that there are no medical reasons for pain then there are lots of us on this site who are experienced at helping people eliminate pain.We are just a word away. You can research us and decide who you are likely to get along with. I also suggested Eckhart Tolle as an author of much on pain and how it can manifest in our bodies without physical reasons.

hi Sarah and Nigel...

The pain hasn't been THAT bad the last two days, but I still want to see my GP.

I just have one more silly question: how do I figure out what GP to transfer to? The way I read the page that you posted about, i actually have to find a new GP myself and contact him/her... i could just find a list of local GPs but i would have no idea if the doctor is any good?

Nigel.. I will keep that in mind, but first i wanna talk to my gp...

Thanks for your quick replies and good advise. I'm so happy to be able to get help from all of you. its been such a life saver!

Hi Bluegirl87

I would find your list of local GPs and contact the practice that is the next nearest to you. They will assign you a GP, which is probably the best place to start. If that works out, great; if not, you can try to request another GP in the practice.

Either that, or you can ask someone you know and trust to recommend a GP to you.

Best wishes

Sarah
