Definition of Psychotherapist
Psychotherapy is a 'talking' therapy, helping to overcome emotional & behavioral anxieties
Psychotherapy and Qualifications
Psychotherapy is a 'talking' therapy, aimed at helping individuals overcome emotional & behavioral anxieties through talking about their concerns, understanding their motivations and establishing more positive ways of thinking and behaving.
It involves exploring thoughts, feelings and behaviors in a structured way with a qualified therapist thereby understanding why certain thought or behavior patterns exist and identifying ways of changing or coping.
You may be asked to complete activities between sessions to reinforce the work done during the session to create and maintain progress. It is important to be aware that there are no 'magical' changes. All change requires input and activity to achieve the required output.
Psychotherapy is generally recognized as being able to cover a wider range of issues and your therapist may utilize a variety of tools to help you overcome your issue(s).
Although there is no legislation in the UK to regulate psychotherapy, a qualified psychotherapist will usually have a diploma in psychotherapy which will have involved approximately 200 hours of psychotherapy training prior to accreditation. They are also likely to be registered with a recognizable therapeutic organization.
