Definition of a Coach

A coach helps clients determine and achieve their personal goals.

Coach and Education

One definition of coaching is that it is a future-focused practice helping clients determine and achieve personal goals. Coaching fills a gap which your best friend, your parents, your teachers, your boss or your partner cannot provide. That coaching gap has important qualities – free from prejudice or bias – which help you make informed, clear decisions based on what's right for you, in your situation, bearing in mind your needs, your priorities and your requirements. Coaching seeks to promote your own insightfulness and ability to find clear, quick, perceptive answers to the areas that hold you back or prevent you from making headway – be it in your career, family, health or finances.

The tools and methods of coaching provide a mirror which will highlight and pinpoint those aspects that are actually preventing us from moving forward. Based on a method of self discovery, coaching doesn't give answers in the usual 'advice' way. But a good coach will literally 'coach' you to find very real and honest solutions and potential actions which you can take.

I qualified with The Coaching Academy in August 2010 after 18 months of part time training. When choosing your coaching training I advise you to thoroughly research the various options and costs, which can vary quite dramatically. It is also always possible to ask for staggered payment methods. At the Coaching Academy we are given up to 2 years in which to complete the course work which is good if you have a full time job or other commitments. There are plenty of websites and information sites about who to train with and I personally would look for a course that offered excellent post qualification support. You can always phone the course administrator and ask them directly. The best place to start your enquiries is the Association for Coaching http://www.associationforcoaching.com/home/index.htm
